Sedbergh Strolls: Family-Friendly Adventures in the Howgills
Sedbergh, nestled at the foot of the majestic Howgill Fells, offers a delightful array of walks perfect for families of all ages. From gentle riverside strolls to slightly more adventurous climbs, there’s something to capture everyone’s imagination.
Pack your boots, grab some snacks, and let’s explore a few of my favourite family-friendly walks around this charming Cumbrian town.
- The River Rawthey Ramble (Easy)
This gentle, accessible walk follows the banks of the River Rawthey, offering stunning views of the surrounding fells and lush meadows. It’s ideal for little legs and those who prefer a flat, easy-going route.
- Route: Start from the centre of Sedbergh and follow the clearly marked paths along the river. You can choose to walk as far as you like and return along the same path.
- Highlights:
- The soothing sounds of the river.
- Opportunities for paddling and stone skimming (weather permitting!).
- Plenty of spots for a picnic.
- Wildlife spotting, with potential to see dippers and wagtails.
- Family-Friendly Features: Flat terrain, easy to follow paths, opportunities for play and exploration. This walk is also perfect for pushchairs and wheelchairs for some portions of the walk.
- The Sedbergh Circular (Moderate)
This circular route offers a slightly more challenging but rewarding experience, taking you through fields and along quiet lanes, with panoramic views of Sedbergh and the Howgills.
- Route: Start in Sedbergh, head towards Brigflatts, then follow paths that circle back towards the town. The route can be adapted to suit your family’s fitness level.
- Highlights:
- Beautiful views of the town and surrounding countryside.
- A variety of terrain, including fields and lanes.
- Opportunities to spot local wildlife and farm animals.
- The historic Brigflatts Quaker Meeting House is located along this path.
- Family-Friendly Features: A good mix of easy and moderately challenging sections, offering a taste of the Howgill landscape. Suitable for older children and those who enjoy a bit more of a walk.
- Settlebeck Gill (Moderate)
This walk takes you along the Settlebeck Gill, a picturesque stream that flows down from the fells. It’s a lovely, shaded route, perfect for a warm day.
- Route: Follow the path alongside Settlebeck Gill, heading upstream. The path can be rocky and uneven in places, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
- Highlights:
- The cool, refreshing atmosphere of the gill.
- Small waterfalls and cascades.
- A chance to explore the woodland environment.
- Great for nature lovers.
- Family-Friendly Features: A bit more adventurous, with some rocky sections, but the beautiful scenery and the sound of the running water make it a memorable experience. Good for kids that like to explore.
- The Calf Viewpoint (Challenging option)
For families with older children who enjoy a more challenging hike, a section of the way to the Calf viewpoint can be taken, without the need to reach the very top. This will provide amazing views without the full hard hike.
- Route: Following the Dales High Way from Sedbergh, you can take a section of the climb up towards the calf, and then return.
- Highlights:
- Amazing panoramic views of the Howgills.
- A sense of accomplishment.
- The rugged beauty of the fells.
- Family-Friendly Features: For families that are used to hill walking, this shortened version provides a great view without the long hike.
