Footsteps and Fells: Family-Friendly Walks Around Kirkby Lonsdale
Kirkby Lonsdale, a charming market town nestled on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, is a haven for families seeking fresh air and stunning scenery.
With its cobbled streets, independent shops, and the iconic Devil’s Bridge, it’s the perfect base for exploring the surrounding countryside. And lucky for us, there are plenty of walks suitable for little legs (and those a little longer!), offering a delightful blend of adventure and natural beauty. Here are a few of my favourite family-friendly walks around Kirkby Lonsdale:
The Devil’s Bridge and River Lune Loop
This is a classic Kirkby Lonsdale walk, offering a mix of history, riverside views, and woodland exploration. The star of the show is, of course, the Devil’s Bridge, a medieval stone bridge spanning the River Lune. Legend has it that the devil himself built it!
- Route: Start from the Devil’s Bridge car park. Follow the well-marked paths along the River Lune, enjoying the tranquil scenery. You can then loop back through the woodland, offering a change of terrain.
- Distance: Approximately 2-3 miles.
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate, with some gentle inclines and uneven paths. Suitable for most families, but not entirely pushchair-friendly in all sections.
- Highlights: The Devil’s Bridge itself, the beautiful River Lune, and the woodland sections.
- Tip: Pack a picnic to enjoy by the river.
Ruskin’s View and the Radical Steps
For a shorter, yet incredibly scenic walk, head up to Ruskin’s View. This famous viewpoint, named after the renowned art critic John Ruskin, offers breathtaking panoramas of the Lune Valley and the fells beyond.
- Route: Start from the town centre and follow the signs towards St. Mary’s Church. From there, you can access Ruskin’s View. For a more adventurous descent, take the Radical Steps, a series of steep stone steps leading down to the riverbank.
- Distance: Less than 1 mile (excluding any extra river side wandering).
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate. The steps can be steep and challenging for very young children or those with mobility issues.
- Highlights: The stunning panoramic views from Ruskin’s View, the historic St. Mary’s Church, and the dramatic Radical Steps.
- Tip: Take your camera! The views are truly spectacular.
The Underley Hall Estate Walk
For a more expansive walk, explore the Underley Hall Estate. This walk offers a mix of woodland trails, open fields, and riverside paths, providing a varied and enjoyable experience.
- Route: Start from the Underley Hall car park. Follow the marked trails through the estate, exploring the woodland and enjoying the views of the surrounding countryside. You can also incorporate sections of the River Lune path.
- Distance: Variable, depending on the chosen route. Options from 2-5 miles.
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate, with some gentle inclines and uneven paths.
- Highlights: The diverse scenery, the peaceful woodland trails, and the views of Underley Hall.
- Tip: Check the estate’s website for any access restrictions or events.
A section of the Dales High Way
For a longer walk or if you have older children, a section of the Dales High Way, a long distance footpath, passes through Kirkby Lonsdale. A short section of this walk can be very rewarding.
- Route: Access the Dales High Way from Kirkby Lonsdale. Head towards the direction of Sedbergh or towards the direction of the River Lune.
- Distance: Variable. You can walk as little or as much as you like.
- Difficulty: Moderate to difficult, depending on length of walk.
- Highlights: Beautiful views, well marked paths, a sense of adventure.
- Tip: Check a map and pack appropriate supplies if doing a longer section.
Tips for Family Adventures
- Check the weather – the Lake District weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared for all conditions.
- Wear appropriate footwear – sturdy walking shoes or boots are essential if you plan on exploring the Lakeland fells or woodlands.
- Pack layers – even on warm days, the weather can change quickly, so it’s always best to pack layers of clothing (including a waterproof!).
- Bring snacks and drinks – keep everyone hydrated and energised with snacks and drinks.
- Plan ahead – some attractions and activities may require booking in advance, especially during peak season.
Kirkby Lonsdale and its surrounding countryside offer a wealth of walking opportunities for families of all ages. So, lace up your boots, pack a picnic, and get ready to explore the beauty of this charming corner of the Yorkshire Dales. Happy walking!
